2010 has been good to us . . . already

It happened so FAST! It happened today. Snow piled up from two days storm - probably 8" of white fluffy stuff. Since it was New Years day, the plows only plowed the main highway and left the side-streets alone which made for dangerous driving. The roads were relatively empty - people were home watching bowl games on TV and snuggling in their warm homes.

Everyone hopped in the car and headed to town - just normal, everyday stuff. Driving a big, sturdy car made going through piles of snow no big deal - it climbed the big hill in front of their home like it wasn't even there. Down the road they headed for town when they hit 'the corner' that caused their big, sturdy car to go out of control, miss the bridge. Mom called out, "Oh #@*&!*, hold on!!!!!!" Shade grabbed the handle above the passenger window and braced for impact. From the street, you could see only the tips of the tires sticking up from the over-turned car laying in the empty canal, tires still spinning. The handle Shade grabbed broke off - the impact was so great.

Four members of my family were in that car today. No one saw the wreck, no one came to their aid - they had to climb out of the car through the passenger door that was ajar. In shock and numb, the boys made it back to the house to alert their dad who was working. They were approximately 1/4 mile away from the house and there was not a soul on the road. They all walked away - stunned, in shock but okay. Bob and Cameron raced out to see what they could do and took some pictures to document what happened:

THE MIRACLE: No one was wearing seat belts!!! Yes, 2010 has been good to us.

I am sure you are aware how lucky you are - and these children need a good lecture on seatbelt use. As a forensic nurse for 21 years, I have been to so many conference over the years where I've seen presentations of postmortem fatalities, with sad photos, of those who didn't wear seat belts. Many of them were in only minor accidents. I guess that's why I cannot even back out of my driveway without mine on. It's funny, when my middle son was getting his driver's license, my friend, Dr. Patrick Besant Matthews, a forensic pathologist, was lecturing in town on "Autos and Alcohol." I had Alex go to his lecture and he saw several hundred slides of bodies in the morgue and traffic accidents as the result of drinking. I wonder if that's why he's been almost a teetotaler ever since!

Popped around to catch up with the four entries I've missed since being in hospital and read them all first via my feed reader from the first to the latest and my word what a shock this entry was...am so happy no one was hurt but not happy that no one came to their aid, car must have been hidden in the ditch quite badly.

Stunning photo's.
The day I left for DR appointment I think it was you who sent me email about photography....am so mixed up, please excuse if it was not you....
I will need to find that email when back home and do more research.

Why have I not seen you around on group...have been going there daily and not seeing you visiting...

HAPPY NEW YEAR...

The ER nurse in me says, wow they are lucky. So glad it turned out good for them. Things like that are hard on us Mom/Grandmas.

Oh no! Thank goodness everyone was safe!
And me, too, not a scratch, a guy run the red light at the T-intersection on 12/2 on my way to work, that's why I was off line during the holidays.
I am just so thankful, if he had hit me from the passenger side, I would have been crushed to pieces.
Take care Berta!

OMG! That is so scary! I am so glad that your family is OK and that they all walked away from that. As you already know, ours wasn't so lucky. Hugs your kids every day and tell them how much you love them.
